Jane Birkin, the actress and singer, inspiration for the famous Birkin bag, died at 76.

British actress and singer Jane Birkin, who charmed France with her English grace, style, and accented French and made the country her home, died at the age of 76.

Jane Berkin is famously known for being the inspiration for Hermès’ Birkin bag. Celebrities such as the Kardashians, Cardi B, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham, and Lady Gaga are fans of the exclusive bags, which range in price from $9,000 to $500,000 and are difficult to obtain.

Birkin died on Sunday at her home in Paris, according to the publication. Her cause of death is still unknown.

News of death comes two months after she cancelled a number of concerts due to health concerns and two years after she suffered a stroke. She was suffering from heart problems in previous years.

Birkin, who was born in London, adopted France as her home country, where she rose to international prominence after forming a musical and romantic partnership with French singer Serge Gainsbourg. Birkin embodied the effortless French-chic look with her long, eye-skimming bangs and classic wardrobe.

French president Emmanuel Macron tweeted on her death, “Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.”

Birkin was best known overseas for her 1969 hit, “Je t’aime… moi non plus,” in which she and her then -lover, the late French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, sang the sexually explicit “Je t’aime… moi non plus.”

Her film credits include a supporting role in the 1966 crime comedy Kaleidoscope and a starring role in the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

She wrote her own album “Arabesque” in 2002, and in 2009 released a collection of live recordings, “Jane at the Palace.”

Birkin had a mild stroke in 2021, forcing her to cancel shows. She had to cancel another show in March due to a broken shoulder blade.

The singer’s return to the stage in May has been postponed, according to the French broadcaster, who quoted her as saying she needed more time and promising her fans she would see them again in the fall.
