Manipur Horror: Kuki women being paraded naked and being sexually assaulted, PM Modi pledges justice for victims

Entire nation is in shock after seeing the viral video of two women from the Kuki community were allegedly paraded naked and subjected to sexual assault on May 4.

According to a senior police officer, the incident happened on May 4 and a zero FIR was filed in the case at the Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in the Thoubal district on May 18. Two months after the FIR was filed with charges of murder, gang rape, and kidnapping against “unknown armed miscreants,” no arrests have been made.

The two women in the video also mentioned the presence of another woman in her fifties who was also made to remove her clothes by the mob in their complaint. The younger woman was “brutally gang raped in broad daylight,” the complaint further alleges.

As per complaint lodged, a group of around 800 to 1,000 people carrying sophisticated weapons like AK Rifles, SLR, INSAS and.303 Rifles” entered their village and later looted and burned it on May 4 afternoon, a day after violence had broken out in the state on May 3. Five members of the village, including the three women and two family members of the youngest, were said to have fled towards the forest during this time. Police allegedly saved the victims later, according to the victims. A mob stopped them on their way to the police station, about two kilometers away, and took them from police custody. They were being transported there when the incident occurred.

In response to the violence in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence and expressed his sadness and rage over the video. No rapist would escape unpunishment, he vowed and urged everyone to put politics aside and work together to defend women.

Union minister tweeted, “The horrific video of sexual assault of two women emanating from Manipur is condemnable and downright inhuman. Spoke to CM N Biren Singh ji who has informed me that investigation is currently underway and assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice.”
